Pigmentation means coloring. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. So, when the melanin is overproduced it leads to Hyperpigmentation. The most common pigmentation issues include age spots that are caused by exposure to the sun. Hence, these are mainly seen on the body parts which are exposed to the sun most of the times i.e. face, hands, arms etc. in the form of small dark patches.
Hyperpigmentation can be treated by using:
- Skin lightening creams to reduce the production of melanin and eliminating the excess amount of melanin in the skin.
- Topical treatment with alpha-hydroxy acids is also beneficial.
- Lasers can be used to treat pigmentation.
